The Palette Pad on Scurlock Farms
A Boutique, Pet-Friendly Farm Stay in the Texas Hill Country
The Palette Pad is a boutique, pet-friendly farm stay at Scurlock Farms, thoughtfully created for couples, creatives, and guests seeking a quiet, restorative escape in the Texas Hill Country near Georgetown. Family-owned and owner-hosted, we specialize in meaningful stays — not mass tourism — and take great pride in welcoming guests who value privacy, beauty, and connection to place.
An Artist’s Cottage with History
Originally built as the art studio and temporary home of artist Pauline Thweatt, The Palette Pad carries a rich creative legacy. Pauline and her husband, Bill Thweatt, hand-gathered and laid every stone inside and out while building their family home just across the ravine.
Beneath the north-facing wall of windows, hundreds of paintings were created under Pauline’s artist name, C. P. Montague, one of President Lyndon B. Johnson’s favorite artists. Today, that same light and quiet continue to inspire rest, creativity, and reflection.
Comfortable, Fully Equipped, and Easy to Settle Into
This one-bedroom cottage is fully furnished and designed for comfort. The kitchen is well stocked with cookware, serving dishes, basic spices, coffee, and an assortment of hot teas. We provide soaps, shampoo, a hair dryer, paper goods, and thoughtful essentials so you can arrive, unpack, and relax.
Guests especially enjoy the wood-burning fireplace and outdoor fire pit. A generous supply of firewood is included, with additional wood available for purchase.
Traveling with an Infant or Toddler
Families visiting with young children are welcome. A step stool, booster dining seat, stroller, and Pack-N-Play are available upon request.
Stay Connected — or Fully Unplug
The Palette Pad offers free high-speed wireless internet, an HD Smart TV, a CD player with a curated selection of music, along with games, puzzles, and books for quiet evenings.
Pet-Friendly by Design
Well-behaved, non-aggressive dogs are welcome at this pet-friendly Hill Country cottage. Furniture covers and towels are provided for paws after outdoor adventures or a swim in the river. Due to severe allergies, we are unable to accommodate cats.
Outdoor Living at Scurlock Farms
Guests love dining beneath heritage live oaks, grilling outdoors, watching sunsets from the bluff, reading in the hammock, or enjoying a glass of wine by the fire pit. Charcoal and grilling supplies should be brought by guests.
On-Site Hosts, Thoughtfully Available
Dan and I, along with our family, live on the farm and are nearby should you need assistance, recommendations, or local insight. We respect your privacy while remaining easily accessible throughout your stay.

The Pallette Pad is the perfect location for exploring the Texas Hill Country. We made forays to Georgetown, Fredricksburg, Austin, Round Lake, Colorado Bend State Park and Sun City. We golfed, hiked, shopped, dined, fed goats, hunted for fossils and relics and relaxed! Dan and Sheron are great hosts and terrific people – very helpful and most interesting. Sheron shared the legacy of the Scurlock Farms and of course, C.P. Montague. What a beautiful setting along the San Gabriel River and rich history. Many thanks to our hosts for making our trip extra special – we look forward to our return.
This cabin is truly wonderful. It was cold and rainy the whole time we were there, but that was okay because this cabin is warm, comfortable, clean, and those windows – wow!!! The owners are kind and very nice. It is a short walk to the river, where there is a stone bank that is great to sit on. I imagine in the spring and summer it is so nice. My husband did a little fly fishing too, and even though he didn’t catch anything (river was too high and fast due too rain), he enjoyed it. Our ten-month-old really enjoyed the cabin as well, exploring and looking out the windows. It is definitely on our list of places to come back to.
I’ve stayed here at least five or more times over the years and love to come each time. The location of the cottage on a local ranch gives peace and quite surroundings. The view from the windows is so tranquil I just never want to leave. (I keep coming back)! Sheron always goes above what one would expect and her muffins are toooooo good. thanks for being there.
My husband and I absolutely enjoyed our stay, especially being able to take along our two little dogs. They loved exploring the country and visiting the goats. We also loved Georgetown and hiking around the lake. They cabin is beyond stocked with and Sheron’s muffins were fabulous treat! Thanks again for sharing this charmer.
This little house was perfect for my husband and I for New Years! It was cozy and warm and the scenery outside was beautiful. The weather turned very cold so we could not explore or take hikes like we wanted to, but we still saw the pretty town square. Grape Creek Vineyards, 600 Degrees, and The Hollow were all located there and had excellent wine/food. We also really enjoyed Monument Cafe, one of the recommendations from our host. All in all a wonderful stay, and we would definitely think of coming back again!
If you are in town visiting friends or just need a quiet getaway then the Palette Pad is the perfect place to stay and a great alternative to a hotel. The homemade muffins, the history of the Palette Pad and being on a working farm is what makes this place unique. We enjoyed the breathtaking views and our walk down to the San Gabriel River. The owners Sheron & Dan were so helpful with directions to finding the place since we arrived in town very late in the evening. I only wish it was closer to home so that we can come back more often for mini getaways, but we definitely will be back!
The property was a beautiful place for a serene getaway in the country! You feel like you are in the mountains sitting at the outside table with the cool breezes. You are on a high embankment looking at the tops of the trees along the river. Listening to the birds sing and resting in the hammock. We were so blessed to spend out 40th anniversary there enjoying the peace and quiet. Thank you so much for everything. Blessings Cecil and Jacque
Staying at the Palette Pad gave us a true taste of what it feels like to live in Texas. Being from Rhode Island we really had no idea what living in Texas was all about. It was much better than staying in a hotel. We enjoyed our morning coffee on the patio accompanied by humming birds and cardinals. I particularly enjoyed my early morning hikes through the pecan orchard down to the San Gabriel River. I spotted lots of wild life including deer one morning. Great sunrises and sunsets from the same location. You truly have an excellent location. Perhaps we will see you again when the wedding plans are made. Thanks for having us.
The Palette Pad was the perfect country retreat for a quick Christmas Holiday (12/22-26). The studio has all of the amenities of home…we actually cooked a lovely Christmas dinner in the cozy kitchen. The hosts couldn’t have been more gracious…Sheron’s muffins are a fabulous touch! The notebooks of the farm/residents history were especially enjoyable and I felt like I was visiting my favorite family members by the end of the trip.
The rock studio sits on a tree-lined bluff above the San Gabriel River valley, with large trees, lots of wildlife to watch and a lovely patio (for cook outs, visits at the end of the day or just sitting and listening to the trees). For nature lovers, the farm has great walking/hiking in pastures, the private farm road, the pecan orchard and along the river. One of the goats, Valentine, has twins, Holly and Jolly the 23rd of December.
It was a special Christmas treat to watch them stand for the first time! There is really no reason to leave the farm, but the historic town of Georgetown is a quick, easy drive and the hosts have a load of ideas regarding area activities. Overall review…excellent! The studio was charming and clean and the hosts were a delight.
