At the Farm
Within walking distance to the San Gabriel River, the restored studio is on a working farm. See horses, cows and goats and feel your stress melt away as you inhale the freshly mown hay from the pasture. Relax surrounded in rustic beauty with a clear view of the night sky and stars, perfect for stargazing. Pick up pecans if you’d like. Archaeology buffs can hunt the limestone river banks for a variety of fossils or the hillside for Tonkawa and Cherokee Indian arrowheads. We have many bird watchers stay with us and all have seen a “lifer”. Visit our blog for a list of those we have seen. Maybe you’d prefer to have a campfire and weenie roast on the banks of the river? Practice your casting in the San Gabriel or sit on the bank and watch the catfish and bass swim by. Make yourselves at home while you are in our care. When fall is in the air, it’s a great time for leaf peeping and photographing migrating birds.
The river rock structures were hand crafted by famed Texas landscape artist C. P. Montague and her husband. The original owner used the Palette Pad as her studio to create thousands of the Texas Hill Country landscapes for which she was known. Many of her works were completed while sitting at her easel at the wall of 7′ northern exposure windows. Bring your palette and paints, you’ll be inspired too! This private, non-smoking accommodation is wonderful for writing, painting, honeymoon or romantic getaways.
Our guests have told us they have really enjoyed the beautiful outdoor dining areas. There are also rockers under the huge live oak trees and you can watch for the deer in the evening, or listen as the owls begin hooting at dusk.
