Day Trip to the San Antonio River Walk!

October 7, 2016 by Sheron Scurlock 2 Comments

Back in June, on the spur of the moment, we decided get away from the farm for a while.   We took a day trip to the San Antonio River Walk.

The month of May was really hectic around Scurlock Farms as we prepared for two big events – a wedding and a multi-generation family vacation with my four siblings, our children and some of the grandchildren.

It rained – a LOT! for a solid week!  – two weeks before the big events.

Due to the heavy rains and soggy ground, our clean up and make-ready plans were slowed down considerably.  That meant we had to work really long hours and extra-hard in order to get everything accomplished that we wanted to prior to the family arriving for the vacation.

You know how it is when company is coming?  You clean up things that don’t normally get a thought.  It was fun, and the visible results were rewarding, along with all of the compliments from our guests!

The family left mid to late Saturday morning after helping get the yards and homes ready for the wedding held at Rocky Overlook that evening.  Thanks to all who stayed to help.

After the last of the wedding family left on Monday, Dan and I decided we needed a little R&R from our vacation.  What to do?

A day trip to the San Antonio River Walk!

We headed out for a day trip to the San Antonio River Walk and the IMax theater.  When visiting this IMAX, we normally binge on movies and watch three of them in a day.

We made a mistake by not checking the theater schedule before this trip.  As it turned out, there was absolutely nothing we wanted to see!  We had seen the really good Alamo movie twice (highly recommend), and the only other options were a children’s animated movie and a horror show of some sort.

Instead we went to Casa Rio, our favorite restaurant on the River Walk,  and requested a table along the water.

I’m sure you have seen photos of this iconic restaurant as it and its colored umbrellas are featured in many advertisements for the River Walk.  We enjoyed a very relaxing, filling meal.  The food was delivered piping hot and was very tasty – no complaints on anything!

We always enjoy feeding the fish, ducks and sparrows our left over chips, and did so again.

These critters can be very entertaining as they fight for the chips.  If allowed, the birds will even hop onto the table, but I draw the line at that!

Large fish are also attracted to the chips and are very visible just below the surface.  Young children delight in the birds and the fish being that close.

We headed back to Scurlock Farms and stopped at Cabelas‘s in Buda.

I think Cabela’s is a guy thing – I know Dan loves to stop by anytime we are in the area!  I always make a beeline to the restaurant on the second floor and let Dan enjoy his shopping.  Fortunately, or unfortunately as the case may be, they did not have what he was looking for.

We returned to the farm ready to tackle the next round of chores.

Turns out it is caring for baby goats!  They all decided to be born over a 3 day span.  Guests arrived to the farm shortly after we got back from San Antonio and we found 12 new babies.  This morning we checked again and had 4 more!

What is your favorite day trip?  What is your favorite thing to do in San Antonio?  Leave us your suggestions in the comment box!

Hi Sheron and Dan. I think that our favourite day trip from Scurlock Farms was when we went to Luckenbach (just outside of Fredericksburg). Lots of history and great music! Tom Newman

      Hi Tom,

We did the Luckenbach day trip with my sister and her husband a couple of years ago. I had forgotten that trip – thanks for reminding me and bringing back some really good memories! It was fun. Still have coffee mugs and Tshirt from there. I will see you again when you return to Indian Bluff at Scurlock Farms in February!!

Repeat destination

Pros:
Great Location on a family-owned Farm.
Owner was extremely friendly and courteous.
Beautiful stretch of river near location.
Peaceful and quite.
Dog friendly
Perfect size for 2 people and a dog.

Details,
Sheron Scurlock provided such a unique and enjoyable rental that we are looking forward to going back to. The location is relatively close to many fun attractions in south Texas. However, the farm itself is well worth the trip to visit. There is a beautiful stretch of the San Gabriel within short walking distance. Sheron provided an extensive tour of the property. We were able to feed and interact with some of the different live stock they have on the farm. Sheron also provided fresh baked muffins and fruit for our mornings. When we arrived home from our enjoyable stay we received a hand written note from Sheron in which she expressed her gratitude that we came to visit and even made references to things we did during our visit. Sheron and the property were so welcoming, courteous, and enjoyable. We have been to many neat rentals over our trips, and this is the first one we are planning to make a repeat visit to. It just takes one visit to feel like you're a part of the Scurlock family. One visit and you'll be hooked and wanting to come back.
