What Movies Were Filmed in Georgetown, TX? A Local Guide

October 19, 2026 by Sheron Leave a Comment

What movies were filmed in Georgetown, TX? Dazed and Confused (1993), Johnny Be Good (1988), My Boyfriend’s Back (1993), and Varsity Blues all shot scenes here, using the Williamson County Courthouse square, Everette L. Williams Elementary School, and the Georgetown High School football stadium. One local guide counts more than two dozen films on the square alone.

Key Takeaways

  • Four movies and one documentary have scene-level Georgetown locations documented in the sources we reviewed: Johnny Be Good (1988), Dazed and Confused (1993), My Boyfriend’s Back (1993), and Varsity Blues.
  • The Williamson County Courthouse at 710 Main Street anchors the town square, which a local guide says has appeared in more than two dozen movies since the 1980s.
  • The Dazed and Confused school scenes were shot at what is now Everette L. Williams Elementary School, 507 E. University Avenue, mostly on the Ash Street side.
  • The Varsity Blues away-game stadium at 2275 N Austin Avenue was demolished in 2010 and the site is now the Georgetown ISD Athletic Complex, so only the site remains to visit.
  • Longer title lists add Bernie, Temple Grandin, Hope Floats, and others, but those lists rarely give exact addresses, so verify before you drive to a spot.
  • Documentary The Sketch Artist by two-time Emmy winning producer Pat Kondelis filmed scene-level segments at Scurlock Farms in Georgetown in 2026.  The documentary premier is at the Austin Film Festival October 30, 2026.
  • Carhartt filmed their Spring, 2025 commercials at Scurlock Farms.  They can be seen at here.  If they were bout Team Rubicon, they were filmed at Scurlock Farms.

At Scurlock Farms, a family-owned 172-acre working farm on the San Gabriel River in Georgetown, TX, we have hosted guests from 30 countries and all 50 states, so we know what visitors want to learn about this town before they arrive. A movie location tour ranks high on that list, and the honest answer is more detailed than most online lists suggest.

The question matters in 2026 because Texas keeps drawing road-trippers. According to the Governor’s office travel and tourism week release, Texas recorded $97.5 billion in direct travel spending in 2026, up 3.5% from 2023. A town square that doubled for fictional Texas towns in several films is an easy stop on a Central Texas drive.

Below, you will find a title-by-title table, the exact addresses documented by published guides, and a clear line between sites inside Georgetown city limits and sites elsewhere in Williamson County. We also explain how to verify a filming claim yourself and how to build a self-guided route around our home in the Texas Hill Country.

What Movies Were Filmed in Georgetown, TX, Title by Title?

Georgetown, TX has at least four feature films with scene-level locations documented in published guides: Johnny Be Good (1988), Dazed and Confused (1993), My Boyfriend’s Back (1993), and Varsity Blues (1999). Other titles appear on broader lists, but the sources we reviewed do not tie them to specific addresses.

Title Year What the sources document Where
Johnny Be Good 1988 Two scenes on the town square, standing in for the fictional town of Ashcroft; Johnny and Leo drive around the courthouse Williamson County Courthouse, 710 Main Street
Dazed and Confused 1993 Scenes featuring Mitch Kramer, most shot on the Ash Street side of the building Everette L. Williams Elementary School, 507 E. University Avenue
My Boyfriend’s Back 1993 Two scenes on the town square, representing downtown Fairview Georgetown town square
Varsity Blues 1999 The Coyotes’ away-game football scene Former Georgetown High School stadium, 2275 N Austin Avenue (now the Georgetown ISD Athletic Complex)
Bernie, Temple Grandin, Love and Death Not confirmed in the sources reviewed Named by ATX Gossip as productions associated with Georgetown; scene sites not documented Verify before visiting

A broader, encyclopedia-style list on Alchetron adds Friday Night Lights (a TV series), Grindhouse, Hope Floats, What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, Where the Heart Is, Michael (1996), and more than a dozen other titles. That list says it is partly based on material from the Texas Film Commission, but it does not say which entries come from that material.

Treat those extra titles as leads, not confirmed stops. The lists also mix feature films, television series, and TV movies without labeling each one, which is why we built the table above only from entries that come with a scene description or an address.

Which Films Used Georgetown’s Historic Town Square?

The Williamson County Courthouse at 710 Main Street, Georgetown, TX 78626 is the film location most often used in town. Grahm’s Guide says the square has appeared in more than two dozen movies since the 1980s, doubling for fictional places such as Ashcroft in Johnny Be Good and Fairview in My Boyfriend’s Back.

In Grahm’s Guide to Georgetown on screen, Johnny Be Good gets two scenes on the square, including one where Johnny and Leo circle the courthouse in a car. My Boyfriend’s Back also has two square scenes, and there the town plays downtown Fairview. Both films came out within five years of each other, which tells you the square’s look was already an established screen shorthand for small-town Texas.

Photograph the Williamson County Courthouse from the sidewalk loop on all four sides; the Johnny Be Good driving shot makes more sense once you walk the same circuit. We recommend a weekday morning. Festival weekends bring crowds that make it hard to frame a clean shot.

Where Was Dazed and Confused Filmed in Georgetown?

Dazed and Confused filmed its Georgetown school scenes at what is now Everette L. Williams Elementary School, 507 E. University Avenue, Georgetown, TX 78626. According to Grahm’s Guide, the scenes featuring the character Mitch Kramer were shot there, and most of the shots were taken on the Ash Street side of the building.

The building has changed names and purpose, so signage will not mention the film. It is an active elementary school today. View it from the public street, skip the campus entirely during school hours, and check the Everette L. Williams Elementary website if you want to confirm current visitor rules.

Bring the movie to the site by walking the Ash Street side first, since that is where most of the shots were taken. Then step back to the University Avenue frontage for a wider view. Fans who expect a preserved set are usually surprised: this is a working school with pickup lines and fencing, and the experience is closer to a ten-minute photo stop than an attraction.

What Georgetown Locations Appear in Varsity Blues?

Varsity Blues used the Georgetown High School football stadium at 2275 N Austin Avenue for the Coyotes’ away-game scene. A location guide reports that this stadium was demolished in 2010, and the site now appears as the Georgetown ISD Athletic Complex, so the original grandstand no longer exists.

That detail matters for planning. You can still visit the address and see the athletic complex, but you will not see the stadium that appeared on screen. Confirm the current facility name and any access rules through Georgetown ISD’s athletic complex page or Georgetown High School, since school athletic grounds are not always open to casual visitors.

The guide describes the film as shot almost entirely in Texas, with Williamson County, Elgin, and Austin as production areas. It also lists a house scene at 102 N Broad Street in Coupland, which is outside Georgetown proper, so we do not count it as a Georgetown location. You can read the full Varsity Blues filming locations guide to compare the regional sites.

Which Movies Were Shot Inside Georgetown Versus Elsewhere in Williamson County?

Filming inside Georgetown city limits means a site you can find on a Georgetown street address, such as the courthouse square, the school on E. University Avenue, or the athletic complex on N Austin Avenue. Productions also used Coupland and Elgin, which are nearby but separate places. Austin saw production too.

Many online lists blur this line. A page may say a movie was filmed in Georgetown when the documented scene sits in Coupland or Austin, or when the claim covers a single exterior shot. Our table separates three groups:

  • Georgetown city limits, address documented: the courthouse square, Everette L. Williams Elementary School, and the Georgetown ISD Athletic Complex site.
  • Rural Georgetown:  Both The Palette Pad and Rocky Overlook at Scurlock Farms were used in the documentary The Sketch Artist.  It premiers at the Austin Film Festival October 30 and November 3, 2026.
  • Regional, not Georgetown: the Coupland house scene from Varsity Blues and the Elgin and Austin production areas.
  • Named but unverified: Bernie, Temple Grandin, and Love and Death, plus the longer Alchetron list.

If a guide gives a street address, check that the city in the address is Georgetown. If it gives only a title and the word “Georgetown,” treat it as a hint and look for a second source.

How Can You Check a Georgetown Filming Claim Yourself?

The most reliable check is to compare at least two independent sources and then ask the owner of the site. The Texas Film Commission runs a searchable statewide location database and a Film Friendly Texas program that connects productions with local community liaisons, so it is the best official starting point.

Here is the sequence we use before recommending a stop:

  • Look for a source that names the address, not just the town. Grahm’s Guide does this for the courthouse and the school.
  • Check whether the site still stands. The Varsity Blues stadium is the clearest example of a location that was demolished in 2010.
  • Confirm current names. Schools and athletic facilities get renamed, which is why the Dazed and Confused building is now Everette L. Williams Elementary.
  • Ask Georgetown ISD or the Texas Film Commission when the sources disagree.

This approach also exposes a limit of the available record. The sources we found give no production dates for most titles and little detail on how Georgetown doubled for fictional towns. A fully sourced filmography does not appear to exist online yet, and we would rather say so than present a polished list that no one can check.

If you want to shoot your own footage, note that the Texas Film Commission says publicly owned properties such as roads and sidewalks typically require filming permits. Government buildings and parks fall under the same rule. A fan photo stop is different from a production, but if your plans go beyond personal use, check with the commission and the city first.

What Is the Best Self-Guided Georgetown Movie Location Tour?

The best self-guided tour starts at the courthouse square, continues to Everette L. Williams Elementary School, and ends at the Georgetown ISD Athletic Complex site. All three stops are inside Georgetown, and together they cover Johnny Be Good, My Boyfriend’s Back, Dazed and Confused, and Varsity Blues. Plan on a half day, with extra time for lunch. We have no verified drive times between stops, so check a map app for your own route.

  1. Start at the Williamson County Courthouse, 710 Main Street. Walk the full loop around the building. This is the Johnny Be Good driving route and a My Boyfriend’s Back setting.
  2. Drive to Everette L. Williams Elementary School, 507 E. University Avenue. Park legally on the street and view the Ash Street side, where most Dazed and Confused shots were taken. Stay off campus during school hours.
  3. Continue to 2275 N Austin Avenue. This is the former Georgetown High School stadium site, now the Georgetown ISD Athletic Complex. Remember that the stadium seen in Varsity Blues was demolished in 2010.
  4. Return to the square for lunch. You can compare the town’s present look with the movie frames you saved on your phone.
  5. Finish with a stop on your own list. The titles on the broader lists, such as Bernie and Temple Grandin, are worth reading about the night before, since no stop is confirmed for them.

Skip the temptation to add Coupland or Elgin on the same morning. They are outside Georgetown, and the tour works better when the three documented stops stay close together.

How Do You Visit the Courthouse and Town Square?

You visit the Williamson County Courthouse by parking near the square and walking its sidewalks, since the building sits at 710 Main Street in the center of downtown Georgetown. The exterior is the film landmark. Interior access is a county matter, so check current public hours before planning to go inside. Parking rules vary, so read posted signs.

The square is compact and walkable, and the downtown Georgetown directory shows how many restaurants cluster around it. For an old-school Georgetown lunch, Monument Cafe is a long-standing local pick. For a dinner in a historic building, City Post Chophouse is the one we send guests to. Menus and hours change, so check both websites first.

Two more stops fit a film day. The Williamson Museum covers local history, and the Georgetown Palace Theatre is the town’s historic performance venue, where evening shows depend on its posted schedule. If the Texas sun wins the afternoon, Blue Hole Park is a shaded place to cool off; check the city’s page for current swimming and safety notices.

Can You Stay on a Working Farm Where a documentary was filmed While You Chase other Georgetown Film Locations?

Yes. Scurlock Farms sits on 172 private acres in Georgetown, TX, on the eastern edge of the Texas Hill Country, about 10 minutes from Southwestern University in Georgetown and 30 minutes north of Austin. The courthouse square and the school are in the same town as the athletic complex site, so you can tour film locations by day and come back to a quiet river farm at night.

The Palette Pad is a 520 square foot rock home with 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom, and room for 2 guests. A wall of windows looks over the river bottom, and a fireplace and fire pit warm the evenings. It was once the studio of artist C. P. Montague, Sheron’s mother and one of President Lyndon B. Johnson’s favorite artists, and her representations of her work hangs in both guest homes. Film fans who like a story behind the walls tend to love it.

If you are traveling with friends or three generations, Rocky Overlook is a 2,500 square foot home with 2 king suites that sleeps 6 to 8. Both homes are about a five-minute walk from the San Gabriel River, and we own a full mile of frontage. Guests fish for bass and catfish, hunt for fossils along the limestone banks, and kids love skipping rocks and playing in the shallows.

We offer free farm tours with Sheron, David, or Daniel aboard a six-seat Polaris or a military HumV, and guests can gather eggs from our free-range hens and interact and feed the farm animals. Dogs are welcome off-leash for a one-time $70 fee covering up to three pets. We cannot host cats because of family allergies. You can read what past visitors say in the Palette Pad guest reviews, or learn more about our boutique farm stay in Central Texas.

A few honest notes. This is a working farm, so expect animals, weather, and country quiet instead of resort service, and The Palette Pad is cozy at 520 square feet. Summer afternoons are hot, so save river time for morning or early evening. Booking direct can save up to 20% compared with OTA booking totals, and $1 from every night booked goes to The Caring Place Food Pantry.

What Should You Know Before Driving the Georgetown Film Trail in 2026?

Before you drive the Georgetown film trail in 2026, expect three realities: two of the documented sites are active school properties, one landmark no longer exists, and the town square is busiest on festival weekends. Planning around those facts keeps the day pleasant and respectful.

First, school safety comes first. Everette L. Williams Elementary School and the Georgetown ISD Athletic Complex belong to the district, so photograph from public sidewalks and avoid weekday pickup and dismissal times. Never walk onto campus without permission.

Second, the sources we reviewed are not a complete record. Grahm’s Guide gives the best scene-level detail, ATX Gossip names additional productions, and the Alchetron list is useful only for finding titles to research. Shoot dates are missing for most entries, so avoid repeating claims you cannot trace.

Third, bring boots you do not mind getting dusty if you plan to pair the tour with river time on the farm, and water shoes for the water. From late spring through early fall, start your tour before mid-morning and keep a water bottle in the car. Georgetown can hit triple-digit heat, and sidewalk loops around the square offer little shade at midday.

Frequently Asked Questions

Was Dazed and Confused filmed in Georgetown, TX?

Yes, partly. Grahm’s Guide documents that scenes featuring the character Mitch Kramer were filmed at what is now Everette L. Williams Elementary School, 507 E. University Avenue, mostly on the Ash Street side. The building is an active school today, so view it from the street.

Was Varsity Blues filmed in Georgetown, TX?

Georgetown High School’s football stadium at 2275 N Austin Avenue was used for the Coyotes’ away-game scene. That stadium was demolished in 2010, and the site is now the Georgetown ISD Athletic Complex. A separate house scene was shot at 102 N Broad Street in Coupland, which is outside Georgetown.

Can you go inside the courthouse or the school used in the movies?

The courthouse exterior is easy to see from the square at 710 Main Street, but interior access is a county decision, so check current public hours. The school and athletic complex belong to Georgetown ISD, so stay off campus unless the district gives permission.

Do you need a permit to film in Georgetown?

The Texas Film Commission says publicly owned properties such as roads and sidewalks typically require filming permits. Government buildings and parks fall under the same rule. Casual photos are different from a production. If you plan anything beyond personal use, contact the commission and the city before you shoot.

Our focus is land stewardship and keeping the farm in the family.  You will find other ranch and farm stays online.

Is Georgetown close enough to Austin for a movie day trip?

Georgetown is about 30 minutes north of Austin, so a half-day film location tour fits easily into a day trip. San Antonio is about 1.5 hours away. Dallas and Houston are each less than three hours. Many guests stay overnight so they can combine the tour with river time.

Are dogs welcome at Scurlock Farms?

Dogs are truly welcome off-leash and are not required to be crated. A one-time $70 fee covers up to three pets. We cannot host cats because of family allergies. Our frequently asked questions page covers other policies.

What Is the Short Answer for Planning a Georgetown Movie Weekend?

The short answer to what movies were filmed in Georgetown, TX is that Johnny Be Good, Dazed and Confused, My Boyfriend’s Back, and Varsity Blues have documented locations on the courthouse square, at the school on E. University Avenue, and at the former stadium site on N Austin Avenue. Scurlock Farms is a documented location for scenes from the documentary The Sketch Artist.  Other titles are worth researching, and the Texas Film Commission is the best place to verify them in 2026 and beyond.

Pros:
Great Location on a family-owned Farm.
Owner was extremely friendly and courteous.
Beautiful stretch of river near location.
Peaceful and quite.
Dog friendly
Perfect size for 2 people and a dog.

Details,
Sheron Scurlock provided such a unique and enjoyable rental that we are looking forward to going back to. The location is relatively close to many fun attractions in south Texas. However, the farm itself is well worth the trip to visit. There is a beautiful stretch of the San Gabriel within short walking distance. Sheron provided an extensive tour of the property. We were able to feed and interact with some of the different live stock they have on the farm. Sheron also provided fresh baked muffins and fruit for our mornings. When we arrived home from our enjoyable stay we received a hand written note from Sheron in which she expressed her gratitude that we came to visit and even made references to things we did during our visit. Sheron and the property were so welcoming, courteous, and enjoyable. We have been to many neat rentals over our trips, and this is the first one we are planning to make a repeat visit to. It just takes one visit to feel like you're a part of the Scurlock family. One visit and you'll be hooked and wanting to come back.
