What was your favorite pet when you were growing up? Are you a dog person, a cat person, or do you just love animals in general?
Dan, my husband, is one of those that just loves all types of animals. He picked up stray cats and dogs as he walked home from school in Rockdale. His favorite dog, Brownie, was acquired that way. Also his favorite cat. There is a later story to be told about that cat getting in the kitchen on a slippery linoleum floor, but that will be for later!
How did you get your pet?
Was it a stray you took pity on or did you get a fancy dog at a pet store? Wherever or however you got your dog, your “friend”, you probably found your pet added lots of joy as you were growing up.

I’m going to talk about my dog, Lucky, and you will probably find yourself somewhere in this story. Hopefully it will trigger many happy memories for you! I know it did for me.
I moved to Rockdale TX just as I finished the second grade. The next year Tommy, Tanya and I came home from school one afternoon and in the corner of the garage, found a little honey colored ball of curly fur in an oatmeal box! You can imagine how tiny she was if she fit into that oatmeal box.
That ball of fur was a tiny, shivering puppy. She was taken into the house and my siblings and I begged to keep her. There was no way mama and daddy could say no. The three of us decided to name her Lucky – you have probably guessed why. She was lucky in that she came to our house! Lucky had such a sweet and good natured personality, and was the perfect family dog.
From that day on, Lucky was part of the family, and I loved her. I remember she loved to run and chase after the three of us as we played in the yard. She was still tiny and young herself, and she would just fall over and instantly be sound asleep. At first we were so worried when she did that, but finally realized she was taking out a little time out to catch a quick nap.
The three of us learned that when WE wanted to rest, “time out!” could be called and Lucky would flop down on the ground with us. She remained there until one of us made the next move and began running and playing again. Then Lucky would start tearing around again. She had boundless energy!
How did you play with your favorite pet?
Was your dog rambunctious or did it have a calmer personality. What kind of trouble did your pet get into?
Every time my family went anywhere, Lucky would wait on the front porch and just as the car turned into the driveway – to make sure she was seen doing it – she would tear out around the house as fast as she could go, barking her head off. She was showing us what a good watchdog she was, and always had an imaginary bugger to chase off! I don’t know what she would have done if there had actually been something there.
My brother caught two baby rabbits. Not having anywhere else to keep them, it was decided they would live in my mom’s art studio. Those rabbits had the run of the entire studio.
One night mama accidentally forgot to close and lock the door. The next morning when she went out to paint, there sat Lucky in the doorway – guarding it to keep the rabbits in until she got there to take over and close the door. Mama said Lucky looked so relieved when she saw her as she could finally go to the house and get some sleep!
Where did your dog sleep – outside, in the house, or even on your bed with you?
I know many smaller breeds love to sleep on children’s beds. And, even some larger, very much larger, breeds like the comfort of a bed. Much to my dismay, Jack, our Great Pyrenees, has bounded up onto our bed with me several times. Needless to say, he doesn’t have much time to enjoy the bed before he is shooed off!
In all the time we had Lucky, she would never come into the house, even though she was invited many times when it was cold or stormy. She wanted to stay near the back steps and refused to stay on the front porch out of the wind.
Daddy built Lucky a doghouse, and she wouldn’t stay in it. He even buried some underground electric cables to heat the ground under the doghouse, and she still wouldn’t go in it. I think Lucky knew that most of our comings and goings were out the back door, and she didn’t want to miss anything!
Lucky lived a good, long life. She was a great playmate and a good listener and confidant. I could tell Lucky anything, and she never repeated a thing! Lucky was definitely our favorite pet of all time!

Hi Sheron,
I would have to say my favorite pet was a Lhasa Apso named “Baby” we had when our children were growing up. She was a gift from my husband and we had many years of joy with her. She was such a sweet and smart little dog and a big part of the family. We lost her in a sudden and unfortunate manner but she will always hold a special place in our hearts.
A big Thank You to you and your family for sharing your wonderful place with us. Our time spent there was a much needed respite.

Hi Lisa,
Sorry to be so long getting back to you! It is amazing how our pets can literally become a member of our families! I am glad you have so many fond memories of “Baby”. Do you have another pet? So many times when we lose one, we say we’ll never get another, then before we know it, we have another! They can never replace the one we lost, but can find their own place in our hearts.
We would love to have you and Larry return to stay with us at Scurlock Farms again!! The evenings are beginning to cool off and some of the fall flowers are beginning to bloom. We had such a wet August everything is lush green and totally untypical for August. We are loving it!!
