Outdoor Activities Georgetown TX: 10 Best Picks for 2026

October 23, 2026 by Sheron Leave a Comment

The best outdoor activities Georgetown, Texas offers are river fishing and fossil hunting on the San Gabriel River, hiking the Goodwater Loop around Lake Georgetown, paved riverside walks on the Randy Morrow Trail, and slow farm days on private land. Pick one water day, one trail day, and one unhurried day, and you have a full weekend in the Texas Hill Country.

Key Takeaways

  • Georgetown, TX sits about 30 minutes north of Austin, so most of the outdoor activities below work as a day trip or a full weekend.
  • The Goodwater Loop is a 28-mile hiking and biking trail around Lake Georgetown, while the Randy Morrow Trail is a 5.5-mile paved route along the San Gabriel River.
  • Scurlock Farms has one mile of private San Gabriel River frontage for fishing (bass, catfish, bluegill, perch, gar), kayaking, tubing and fossil spotting.
  • Dogs are welcome off-leash at Scurlock Farms; a one-time $70 fee covers up to three pets, and cats are not permitted.
  • Summer afternoons are hot; plan river and trail time for early morning or early evening.
  • Check current hours, fees, water levels and fishing rules with the official source before you go.

Picture a Saturday morning at the river. The limestone banks are still cool under your palms, and mist lifts off the water in thin curls. A heron works the shallows with slow, deliberate steps, and somewhere behind you a rooster is still making his case for the day. A kid skips rocks without being asked, each stone ticking across the surface before it sinks. The air smells of cedar, damp stone and cut hay. At Scurlock Farms, a family-owned 172-acre working farm on the San Gabriel River in Georgetown, TX, we host guests from across Texas, all 50 states, and from 30 countries, so we know what visitors ask before they arrive.

This guide covers ten outdoor activities in Georgetown, Texas, ordered by how useful they are to a typical visitor. Each entry includes a best-for note, a practical tip, and one honest caveat. It is written for Georgetown, Texas only, not the other towns that share the name.

Tourism in the area is healthy. According to AirDNA, Georgetown short-term rental revenue rose 90.0% year-over-year from August 2026 to August 2026, which tells you demand for nature-based stays is climbing. Book early for spring wildflower season and fall weekends.

1. Where Can You Fish, Paddle and Hunt Fossils on the San Gabriel River?

The San Gabriel River is the waterway that runs through Georgetown and forms the northern edge of Scurlock Farms, where one mile of frontage gives guests private access to fishing, kayaking, tubing and fossil spotting on wide limestone banks.

Guests fish for bass, catfish, bluegill, perch and gar. Sheron, who has lived on the farm for more than 55 years, can tell you which limestone bank gives up the best fossils after a spring rain. Kids tend to spend an hour skipping rocks, and some guests find arrowheads along the banks and in the pasture, though nothing is guaranteed.

The caveat: water levels change with rainfall, and a low river means more walking and wading than paddling. Check current conditions and Texas fishing license rules with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department before you cast a line. River time is best early in the morning or in the early evening.

Both guest homes at Scurlock Farms are a five-minute walk from the water. The Palette Pad, a 520 square foot rock home that sleeps 2, has a wall of windows over the river bottom, so you can watch the light change before you even put boots on. Rocky Overlook is a 2,500 square foot home that sleeps 6-8.

Best for: couples, anglers, families with curious kids.

Pack: sandals for the river, boots you do not mind getting dusty, and a camera for fossil finds you plan to photograph

2. What Is the Goodwater Loop Trail Like for Hiking and Biking?

The Goodwater Loop is a 28-mile hiking and biking trail that circles Lake Georgetown and connects the lake parks. It is the longest outdoor route in the area and suits hikers who want options rather than one fixed distance.

Most visitors do not attempt the full loop in a day. Instead, you pick a section from one of the lake parks and turn around when you are tired. Cedar Breaks Park, Jim Hogg Park and Russell Park all sit on the lake and give you places to start.

Honest note: shade is patchy on parts of the route, and Texas summer heat makes midday hiking unpleasant. Go early, carry more water than you think you need, and check Lake Georgetown recreation information for trail conditions and closures before you leave. Best for: hikers and cyclists who want distance, not small children.

3. Which Georgetown Trails Are Easy for Beginners and Kids?

The Randy Morrow Trail is a 5.5-mile paved route that runs from San Gabriel Park along the San Gabriel River to Booty’s Road Park near Lake Georgetown. Because it is paved, it works for strollers, scooters and casual bikers.

The north and south San Gabriel River trails run one mile each, which makes them useful for short family outings. Garey Park adds hiking and equestrian trails plus a dog park and a splash pad.

Trail surface and distance matter more than most guides admit. Paved means stroller-friendly; the lake-park sections of the Goodwater Loop are better for older kids with real shoes. At Scurlock Farms, the farm’s own hiking trails and a spring-fed creek hike give younger children a gentler, supervised introduction to Hill Country terrain. Best for: toddlers through teens, first-time hikers.

4. Where Can You Swim in Georgetown, Texas?

Swimming in Georgetown means choosing a managed park swimming area or a lake access point rather than wading in at random. Blue Hole Park is the best-known spot along the San Gabriel River, 2 blocks off the historic downtown square.

Check the City of Georgetown parks page for current swimming rules, hours and safety notices before you go, since river conditions change after rain. Lake Georgetown also offers swimming and boating through its park areas; confirm access points with the official lake site.

Caveat: weekends in July are busy, and parking fills early. Arrive before mid-morning, bring water shoes for rocky bottoms, and keep a close eye on kids near moving water. On the farm itself, river wading and tubing happen at your own pace without the crowds, since the property is private and not open to the public. Best for: summer day trips.

5. What Outdoor Activities Are Available at Lake Georgetown?

Lake Georgetown is a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reservoir served by three large parks, Cedar Breaks Park, Jim Hogg Park and Russell Park, which provide lake access for fishing and boating along with picnic areas and campsites.

The lake works well as a base for a full outdoor day: launch a kayak, fish from the shore, then picnic. Camping is available, so check the official Lake Georgetown recreation page for reservations, fees and seasonal closures.

Practical caveat: fees, boat ramp status and water levels change, so confirm them the week you travel. Spring and fall are the most comfortable seasons; August is not. Best for: boaters, campers, anglers who prefer open water to river banks.

6. What Can Families Do Outdoors Beyond Hiking?

Family outdoor time in Georgetown includes park play, splash pads, farm attractions and guided programs. Garey Park has a splash pad and dog park, and Sweet Eats Fruit Farm is a family farm attraction in the area, with seasonal fruit picking.

The City of Georgetown Parks and Recreation Outdoor Adventure Program runs year-round with weekend trips, after-school programs, instructional clinics and a summer teen adventure camp, which is useful for longer stays or local families. Georgetown Outdoor Discovery is another local option to look into.

For a working-farm day, Scurlock Farms offers free farm tours narrated with family history aboard a six-seat Polaris or a military HumV, plus tractor rides, free-range egg gathering from resident hens, and up-close time with horses, goats and cattle. The farm is a working one, so animals, weather and country quiet set the pace. Baby goats and calves appear in season.

7. How Do You Spend a Rainy Day Outdoors-Adjacent Near Georgetown?

A rainy day near Georgetown works best when you swap trails for indoor-outdoor stops: covered porches, the historic square and local museums. Williamson Museum and the Georgetown Art Center are both close to the square.

Afterward, the Georgetown Palace Theatre offers evening performances; check its schedule. Teens who resist museums often warm up to a fireplace afternoon with board games, which is one reason the farm’s homes are popular on wet weekends.  Plenty of games are found in both Rocky Overlook and The Palette Pad at Scurlock Farms.

Honest note: Georgetown’s square gets crowded on festival weekends. If you want quiet, go early on a weekday. Muddy riverbanks are also slippery, so skip the river on the day after heavy rain.

8. Is Inner Space Cavern Worth Adding to an Outdoor Itinerary?

Inner Space Cavern is a guided cave attraction in Georgetown that gives you a cool underground break on hot days. It is a well-known tourist stop, not a hidden gem, but it earns its place on a hot afternoon.

Tour options, prices and hours change, so confirm them on the official site before you plan around a specific tour. Pair it with a morning on the trails, then return to the river in the evening when temperatures drop. Best for: hot afternoons, school-age kids.

9. Which Dog-Friendly Outdoor Activities Work in Georgetown?

Dog-friendly outdoor activity in Georgetown starts with Garey Park, which has a dog park, and extends to riverside trails. The harder part is finding lodging where dogs get real room to run rather than a small fenced yard.

Scurlock Farms welcomes dogs off-leash, and they are not required to be crated. A one-time $70 fee covers up to three pets. Cats are not permitted because of family allergies. Dogs have pasture, trails and the river to explore, with the usual caution around livestock and water.

The Palette Pad sleeps 2 and has a fireplace, fire pit and BBQ grill, so it suits a couple traveling with a dog. For a bigger group, Rocky Overlook is a 2,500-square-foot home with 2 king suites and baths that sleeps 6 to 8 and is also pet-friendly; learn more on the Rocky Overlook page.

10. What Quiet Outdoor Time Does a Working Farm Stay Offer?

A working farm stay is a lodging experience where the land itself is part of the stay: pasture, orchard, animals and weather. At Scurlock Farms, 172 acres include a 20-acre pecan orchard, centuries-old live oaks, wooded river bottom and open pasture.

Evenings are the best part. You get a fire pit, a hammock, the sound of hens settling in, and a sky with very little light pollution. Seasonal variety helps: wildflowers in spring, baled hay and pecan harvest later in the year.

Trade-offs are real. This is not a resort. The Palette Pad is cozy at 520 square feet, and a working farm means dust, animals and country quiet. If you want a spa and room service, look elsewhere. If you want peace, a river and a host family who knows the land, this fits. Best for: couples, writers, artists and anyone craving a slow weekend.

How Do the Ten Picks Compare at a Glance?

An outdoor activity comparison table is a planning tool that shows best season, effort level and ideal visitor for each pick. Use it to choose one water, one trail and one rest day. Cost and hours are not shown because they change; confirm with each official source.

Activity Effort Best Time of Day Best For
San Gabriel River at Scurlock Farms Easy to moderate Morning or early evening Couples, anglers, families
Goodwater Loop (28 miles) Moderate to hard Early morning Hikers, cyclists
Randy Morrow Trail (5.5 miles, paved) Easy Morning Strollers, casual bikers
Blue Hole Park Easy Before mid-morning Summer day trips
Lake Georgetown parks Easy to moderate Morning Boaters, campers, anglers
Inner Space Cavern Easy Afternoon Hot days, school-age kids
Farm tours and animals Easy Anytime All ages

How Do You Build a Two-Day Outdoor Itinerary in Georgetown?

A two-day Georgetown outdoor itinerary pairs one active day with one slow day. Day one covers trails and water; day two covers the farm, the square and downtime. Adjust for season, since summer afternoons run hot.

  1. Day one, morning: Hike a section of the Goodwater Loop or walk the Randy Morrow Trail while it is cool.
  2. Day one, lunch: Eat on the historic square; Monument Cafe is a Georgetown classic near downtown. Check current hours.
  3. Day one, evening: Return to the farm for river time and a fire pit.
  4. Day two, morning: Take a farm tour, get tractor rides as you put out hay for the cattle, and meet and feed the goats and horses.
  5. Day two, afternoon: Visit Inner Space Cavern or the Williamson Museum.
  6. Day two, dinner: Try Wildfire or City Post Chophouse, and make a reservation on weekends.

From Scurlock Farms, Austin is about 30 minutes south, and San Antonio is about 1.5 hours away. Dallas and Houston are each less than three hours, which makes Georgetown an easy weekend from any Texas metro.

Where Should You Stay for Outdoor Activities in Georgetown?

The best stay for outdoor activities in Georgetown is one that puts trails and river access at the front door. Hotels near the highway work for convenience, but a farm stay turns the outdoors into the reason you came.

The Palette Pad is a 1-bedroom, 1-bathroom rock home for 2 guests, a five-minute walk from the San Gabriel River. It was originally the studio of artist C. P. Montague, Sheron’s mother, where representations of her art hangs throughout the homes. Rocky Overlook suits larger groups.

Booking direct can save up to 20% compared with OTA booking totals, and $1 from every night booked goes to The Caring Place Food Pantry. Check the frequently asked questions for policies, and see more photos in the Palette Pad image gallery.

What Should You Know Before You Go?

Safety and access in Georgetown depend on season, rainfall and your own preparation. Visitors underestimate Texas heat, river conditions and wildlife most.

  • Heat: Summer afternoons are hot. Hike or paddle early, and carry plenty of water.
  • River conditions: Water rises and clears at different rates after rain. Check current local conditions before wading or tubing.
  • Licenses: Fishing rules and license requirements change. Confirm them with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.
  • Spring allergens: Wildflower season is beautiful, but cedar and pollen can be rough for sensitive visitors.
  • Parking: Popular park lots fill early on summer weekends and festival days.

Pros:
Great Location on a family-owned Farm.
Owner was extremely friendly and courteous.
Beautiful stretch of river near location.
Peaceful and quite.
Dog friendly
Perfect size for 2 people and a dog.

Details,
Sheron Scurlock provided such a unique and enjoyable rental that we are looking forward to going back to. The location is relatively close to many fun attractions in south Texas. However, the farm itself is well worth the trip to visit. There is a beautiful stretch of the San Gabriel within short walking distance. Sheron provided an extensive tour of the property. We were able to feed and interact with some of the different live stock they have on the farm. Sheron also provided fresh baked muffins and fruit for our mornings. When we arrived home from our enjoyable stay we received a hand written note from Sheron in which she expressed her gratitude that we came to visit and even made references to things we did during our visit. Sheron and the property were so welcoming, courteous, and enjoyable. We have been to many neat rentals over our trips, and this is the first one we are planning to make a repeat visit to. It just takes one visit to feel like you're a part of the Scurlock family. One visit and you'll be hooked and wanting to come back.
